Tuscan kitchens are one of the coziest décor styles. The color palette is warm, and gives a lived-in ambience. Tuscan décor is typically characterized by a collected look, as if the items have been passed down through the generations. Plan your kitchen to have the appeal of the Tuscan countryside.
Start with the Color Palette
At the heart of it, Tuscan décor starts with a Mediterranean color palette. As Home and Garden TV points out, this means colors inspired by the coast – think yellow, terra cotta and earth tones. Tuscan kitchens tend to be light and airy, so plan to start with buttery yellow or cream-colored walls. Don't go bold with accent colors – instead of citrus green, choose olive. Opt for earthy terra cotta over red. Show a restrained hand in spreading out your accent colors, though. Most of the appeal should come from the homey feel of a country hearth.
Choose Natural Wood
Because the Tuscan kitchen is country-inspired, wood is the preferred material for the cabinetry. You don't have to pick a specific type of wood. However, keep the finish natural. Additionally, the décor style gets part of its charm from feeling time-worn, so consider wood that looks aged.
Add Painted and Glazed Pieces
The next step in decorating your kitchen is adding that collected look. You don't want everything to match. So, if you're adding an island, consider making the base different than the rest of the cabinetry. Painted or glazed wood works well because it gives the pieced-together feel. Indeed, consider having the cabinetry glazed with a distressed finish to appear aged. If you don't have an island, add painted or glazed pieces for a breakfast nook, hutch or other kitchen furnishing.
Include Stone Work
Tuscan kitchens were built to last the ages. Therefore, try to include stone work in your décor. For instance, consider having a backsplash done in stone instead of tile. If you can find an antique stone range hood, have that installed above your oven. Also include stone work in accent pieces, for example with a marble cutting board.
Finish with Metal
In addition to stone accent pieces, metal gives that timeless feel. Copper accent pieces are a popular addition for the Tuscan kitchen. For instance, you could hang copper pots from a rack or choose copper canisters for your countertop. An aged copper mold for your wall would be a charming addition. Likewise, consider black iron fixtures for the cabinetry or light fixtures. Essentially, your kitchen should look ready to withstand the test of time – even if it's brand new.
